What made you decide that music is a thing for you?
It just happened really it was quite late for me I was 45 and I just sat down one day and started writing songs and haven’t stopped since.
Introduce us to you and your musical history.
It’s just me and my shadow, although I do write and collaborate with my producer Si. My musical history was classical, I played the cello when I was young.
Name me your 3 favorite Albums.
This question isn’t fair! there’s so much great music out there and I love all of it so this is not a definitive list but in terms of my writing journey, these all made a big impression.
Simon and Garfunkel – Bridge over Troubled Water
Scott Matthews – Passing Stranger
Taylor Swift – Folklore
What was the first song you heard that steered you into a music path?
That would be a long time ago now, the first record I bought was Bohemian Rhapsody, and I loved it.
The music industry is the hardest industry in the world to progress in, How do you feel you are doing?
I think I’m doing ok considering I didn’t record a song until I was 45.
I’m seeing a lot of debate about women not feeling safe at music gigs, any thoughts on what we need to do to help?
I think we should all show respect to one another, and if you witness people not doing it, it should be called out.
As you develop as an artist and develop using socials what ways do you get new ears on your music? Any tips?
Just be yourself, and put the focus into your music because ultimately that’s what people are interested in. If that fails, blackmail works quite well ..
Tell us Two truths and a lie about you.
I was once attacked by a Goose.
I once had a pet fly called Fred.
I like to visit graveyards at night.
What’s your thought on spotifys monopoly on the music industry?
People can complain about reality as much as they want but it doesn’t change reality and streaming is the way the world has gone so why not look at the positives, more people are getting their music listened to.
Do you sign up for any conspiracy theories?
I only sign up to one theory, that none of us really know the truth about this life we live.
Did you buy anything you don’t need during the pandemic?
Yeah, too much Ice cream.
What was the worst experience on stage?
Starting a song and singing for a minute before I realised I was playing the chords to a different song.
Tell us something about you that you think people would be surprised about.
I don’t bite.
What makes you stand out as a band/artist?
A spotlight and my sense of humor.
I hear you have new music, what can you tell us about it.
Sure, the album is called prophecy it’s a collection of songs that I wrote during lockdown.
Talk me through the thought process of the new tune/s.
With hindsight I’ve been making this record for a long time but didn’t know I was, its really an introspective journey, the title track is based on a dream I regularly had when I was younger looking down from some cliffs at the sea below, and it never really made sense to me until I started writing songs and suddenly had the old eureka moment like Ahh it’s a song.
What was the recording process like?
It’s been easy in some respects and hard in others, some songs just made sense straight away but others took a while longer before we got something we were happy with.
What was the biggest learning curve in writing the new tunes?
The whole journey has been a massive learning curve for me and continues to be so, considering I’d never written a song until my mid 40’s I’ve had to put in a serious amount of work, but it’s been worth it.
Would you change anything now it’s finished?
No, I don’t think I would, I was lucky enough to have the space to spend a bit of time going back through it, and ended up redoing the vocals just because I have evolved whilst we’ve been making it, but then there comes a point when you’ve just got to say, right that’s it.
Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?
I have a book called ‘Walking with Mae’ which has been published in conjunction with the album, it’s a fictional story based but based on my personal experience, together with the lyrics.
