TOM WILLS X SHOLZ-Y

RGM INTRODUCING – WE INTERVIEW TOM WILLS X SHOLZ-Y

Thanks for joining us today… Tell us bit about where you are from and how you got into music?

I’m from Chorley in Lancashire originally, but I’ve been based in Manchester for years now. I live here with my partner Matt and our rescue Rottweiler Rex.

I got into music young, doing open mics at 14 in pubs around Lancashire. Proper terrified but loving it. When I was 16, I snuck into Canal Street with a dodgy fake ID, absolutely bricking it, but the second I hit that dancefloor everything just made sense. That freedom, that energy, that’s what I’m still trying to capture in my music now.

What’s the live music scene like in Manchester right now?

It’s brilliant, honestly. Manchester has always had this incredible music culture, and right now it feels really alive. The queer scene, especially Canal Street, the club nights, Pride events, there’s just so much happening. It’s a proper supportive community for artists trying to build something.

Anyone we should be looking out for (bar you, of course)?

There’s loads of talent coming through. Keep an eye on the Manchester queer music scene, there’s some incredible artists making waves right now. Not from Manchester but I absolutely love Joesef, a Scottish artist.

Do you think its easy to become a victim of our surrounds sometimes?

Yeah, definitely. When you’re surrounded by something constantly, it’s easy to get caught up in it and lose perspective. I think you have to be conscious of that and make sure you’re staying true to yourself, not just doing what everyone else is doing. You’ve got to beat your own drum.

What are your ambitions as an artist?

My ambitions are to keep growing, keep connecting with people through the music. I want to build out the live side, play festivals, headline shows, tour properly. But more than anything, I just want to keep making music that matters to people. I also want to become the first male Dame. I just think that would be a cool title. Dame Tom Wills. Move over Shirley, there’s a new bitch in town.

Whats your favourite social media platform to use and why?

Instagram, probably. It feels the most natural for connecting with people and sharing what I’m up to. TikTok’s great for reach, but Instagram feels more personal.

We believe its essential to have a presence on Facebook, Instagram and X to introduce yourself to all the different types of audiences out there, what’s your thoughts on that?

Yeah, I think you have to be everywhere now. Different platforms reach different people, and you never know where someone’s going to discover you. It’s a lot to keep on top of, but it’s essential really.

What’s your view on the Music industry today?

It’s tough, honestly. There’s so much music out there, so much competition, and breaking through feels harder than ever. But at the same time, there’s more opportunities than ever before to connect directly with people and build something without needing a massive label behind you. You just have to be smart about it and stay consistent.

Whats your thoughts on AI generated music?

Not a fan, to be honest. Music should come from real human experience, real emotion. AI can’t replicate that. I think it devalues what we do as artists.

Whats the biggest thing you have learned recently as you progress with your music?

That it’s a marathon, not a sprint. You can’t rush it. You have to keep building, keep showing up, keep putting the work in, and eventually it clicks. Patience is everything. But I’m also very impatient haha.

What’s currently in your ears and on rotation at the moment?

Fred Again, Anyma, Vintage Culture for the melodic house vibes. But I’ve also been going back to Erasure and Pet Shop Boys a lot recently, just classic synth-pop perfection. But also my daily without a miss, Ella Fitzgerald.

What was your worst experience on stage? Any funny stories to share?

Recently performed at Pride in Trafford and the tech completely failed. My in-ears stopped working after soundcheck, no vocal reverb in the house mix, visuals didn’t sync. It was rough, it was a bit like Phoenix Nights, everything going wrong. But the crowd were also amazing. Sometimes you just have to push through. I’ve once been introduced onto the stage as Scott Mills. I get Tom Willis a lot. And also just the crowd asking can they sing like it’s karaoke.

Got any fun, funny stories from life on the road?

Still building that side of things, but ask me again in six months when I’ve done a proper tour and I’ll have loads. And I’m sure it will be something to do with needing toilet breaks.

I hear you have new music. What can you tell us about it?

Yeah, I’ve just released “Laid,” which is a melodic house reimagining of the James classic. I saw them perform it at Lytham Festival with my dad years ago, and it just stuck with me. The song has this queer-coded energy, this chaos and messiness, and I wanted to bring that into 2026 and put it on a dancefloor where it belongs.

What was the recording process like?

Really collaborative with my producer Sholz-Y. We went through loads of versions before we found the right balance, keeping the rawness of the original but making it euphoric and dancefloor-ready. The moment it clicked was when we laid down the final vocal take and played it back. Everything just made sense.

Would you change anything now it’s finished?

No, I think it’s exactly what it needed to be. You can overthink these things, but sometimes you just have to trust your gut and let it go. No looking back, just got to keep moving forward, no regrets and all that.

Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?

Just that I’ve got more music coming this year. “Lost in the Noise” drops in July, which is a bit more personal, about mental health and finding your way through the chaos. And I’m building out the live side, so if you want to see me perform, keep an eye on my socials for dates.

Thank you for streaming, for showing up, for sharing the music. If you’re feeling lost right now, you’re not alone. The dancefloor’s waiting for you 💋
