RGM INTRODUCING – WE INTERVIEW WEST MIDLANDS ARTIST ROSA CAELUM
Hiya folks thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today, grab a brew and take a seat.
What made you decide that music is a thing for you? The way we got into music was very organic as we essentially fell into it together as we all have a love for certain artists and we just clicked instantly as musicians and friends.
Introduce us to you and your musical history.
Liam (Guitar) and Jake (Drums) have played in bands previously to Rosa Caelum, however Ben (Guitar), Travis (Bass), and Rob (Vocals) had no prior experience playing in bands. Even though 3/5 of us have not played in bands before, our ability to connect as musicians has had many people shocked when they find out this fact.
The music industry is the hardest industry in the world to progress in, How do you feel you are doing?
After a year we are more than satisfied with our position within the industry as it is difficult to navigate through, but we are always looking to move forward and progress with bigger gigs and better songs.
How have your songwriting skills developed over time?
In the past 6/7 months, we have all grown in confidence as songwriters and rely on each other to get the best out of the new songs we have been writing and we can collectively say we are closer to finding our unique sound with every new song we write.
I’m seeing a lot of debate about women not feeling safe at music gigs, any thoughts on what we need to do to help?
It should already be the norm for men to treat women correctly at gigs and that in recent circumstances isn’t happening, so creating awareness and speaking out against this issue is paramount to ensure women within the industry and those going to concerts should feel safe doing something they love so much.
As you develop as an artist and develop using socials what ways do you get new ears on your music? Any tips?
We think consistently providing quality content and new music gives everyone who comes across the best chance to see and hear who you are and if they love what they’re hearing and seeing then they are most likely to tell others to check you out. We’re always posting on our social media, whether it is a sneak peak of a song or taking everyone along on a night out, or anything like that because people love a bit of silly content that they can relate to as well as quality music.
Tell us Two truths and a lie about you.
We have played at the O2 Institute, Ben’s pedal board looks like a spaceship, and our tour manager is called Romulus. Now we’ll let you figure out what is what ☺
What’s your thought on Spotify’s monopoly on the music industry?
Apart from the pay-outs, we believe that it is a great platform to showcase our music and discover new artists. It allows new listeners to hear and see you, so with it having such an important part within the industry we feel that it is a must to create a presence on that site.
Do you sign up for any conspiracy theories?
No, except for the next time someone tells you the government wouldn’t do that, yes, they would.
Did you buy anything you don’t need during the pandemic?
Just simply, toilet paper.
What was the worst experience on stage?
At every important gig, Liam seems to enjoy breaking his strings by hitting his guitar way too hard, however, it makes for a great scene.
Tell us something about you / each member that you think people would be surprised about.
Ben is currently studying for a physics degree, Jake is a paramedic, Trav didn’t hit his head as a child, Liam Played for Wolves Football academy as a kid and Rob taught himself piano through the lockdown.
What makes you stand out as a band/artist?
While we all love similar music, we feel that the differences in our tastes are what set us apart and make us a stronger unit. We combine so many influences together when we are writing it allows us to be free with our musical identity, but the main thing is we are all best mates, the connection we have as five lads are the most important thing because it isn’t the chore. There’s this feeling that the bond is what is going to push us further and supply us with more and more opportunities for the future.
I hear you have some new music, what can you tell us about it?
It’s a taste of what’s to come. “The Lovers Were The Last Ones To Leave” is a song that incorporates a little bit of everything that we are about. Swirling guitars, soulful lyrics and melody, thunderous drums, and a big old load of bass guitar to knock you about.
Talk me through the thought process of the new tune/s.
For the new single, Liam had almost a full demo of the song but it contained no lyrics and luckily Rob had some that fit perfectly with the music. So then it was the process of taking it into the rehearsal room with everyone and fleshing it out to where we have it today. Because of this everybody is able to sprinkle their magic onto the song before we take it into the studio.
What was the recording process like?
It felt almost like a fever dream. We had two days at the Wonderful Magic Garden studios in Wolverhampton where we recorded and produced the song with Gavin Monaghan and Liam Radburn. They were brilliant to work with and so supportive when going through the track. We had so much fun we decided to go clubbing on the first night before mixing the next day and there were definitely some sore heads while we were finishing the song off.
What was the biggest learning curve in writing the new tunes?
Not overcomplicating everything. Many people try and include anything and everything to a song and we have certainly done that in the first phases of writing but realising that you need to provide the song with just what it needs and not chuck stuff in for the sake of it matters a lot.
Would you change anything now it’s finished?
We are all over the moon with how it is now and those who have listened to it, love it more than we do funnily enough.
Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?
Thank you for having us, it has been an absolute pleasure. We hope everyone enjoys the song if so go share it with others, we are so looking forward to what 2023 has to offer and by streaming this song it is a great way to help kick the year off. Follow us on our socials @rosacaelum on everything to catch more updates on gigs and releases. ☺
