RGM INTRODUCING – WE INTERVIEW YORK BAND THE BLACK SKIES
Hiya folks thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today, grab a brew and take a seat.
What made you decide to start the band?
We started the band in through the first lockdown, I was posting videos on Instagram of me singing, mostly terrible to begin with but Luke was loving them, then eventually he said we should have a jam sesh, and that first time with my lyrics and Luke’s guitar skills, it was like lightning in the air, and we just went from there really.
Introduce us / all to the members and your musical history?
Luke, i originally started learning guitar at the age of 12, joined my first metal band at 14, played in more bands, joined the final metal band at 17 and still continue to play with Pariah to this day.
James, I did a little bit of choir at a young age in school but apart from that my musical history is mostly singing in the shower 😊
What’s the music scene in York like these days??
The music scene in York is still thriving shout out to Seritones, Bull, Penine Suite, Pavilion, Trueman, Glass Caves, Perspex, to name a few.
Do you subscribe to any conspiracy theories?
How much time you got?
Did you buy anything you don’t need in the pandemic?
Yes, James bought 7 capos, because the keep going missing, Luke bought a steel tongue drum and lots of beer.
What useless party trick do you have?
James- the ability to drink a dangerous amount of peach schnapps, Luke- the ability to throw bottles around like a professional.
What was the most fun you have had on stage?
Luke, playing the metal to the mass’s final at key club, James I haven’t done a gig yet we need to get a few more songs recorded before we can.
What was the worst experience on stage?
Luke, ropey gig in Selby because the full band were so hungover from a rough night before
Tell us something about you / each member that you think people would be surprised about?
James “Luke eats raw mushrooms like there apples, absolute wrongen behaviour”
Luke “James diet consists of monster energy, Bovril, and domino’s pizza”
If you had to describe your band/music to an alien how would you describe it?
First off, does the alien speak English, cause if not a bit pointless, second out of this world.
What makes you stand out as a band?
The thing we think probably makes us stand out is the fact that Luke is a metal guitarist and I am a soul singer for the most part.
Right now, what’s pissing you off the most?
Currently, James is pissing off Luke, for sport.
What’s your favourite song to play live and why?
Wonderwall (It sounds nothing like the original though)
I hear you have a new single, what can you tell us about it?
Its loosely based around the concept of being stuck in your head and trapped in your day to day, feeling like there’s no escape, which I’m sure many may relate to.
Talk me through the thought process of the single?
The process of the single started with some rough lyrics and a vocal melody for a song, which over a few weeks, our producer helped us refine it into a proper tune, throwing ideas back and forth, then it was practice, practice, practice, then thrown into the studio.
Luke- The recording process was really good and great to be in such a professional environment with incredible names such as Ben Hammond, Paul Gorry, George Shilling, Debralee Wells, Matt Seddon etc
James- it was absolutely mad, nerve racking to go from playing in my bedroom during lockdown to being thrown into such a professional environment where everyone is speaking all this jargon, I basically only understood about 10% of anything that was going on but we got there eventually.
What was the biggest learning curve in writing the single?
James- the biggest learning curve was literally everything I was just some lad who occasionally wrote down his thoughts, but with the help of Luke, Paul and Matt, I’m starting to understand more and more each day about music theory.
Would you change anything now that it’s finished?
We wouldn’t change a thing, the whole experience has been incredible for us.
What are your plans for the year ahead?
Release more singles, and work towards an album.
Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?
Thank you to everyone who has viewed, shared, liked subscribed, pre-saved, supported us all that jazz, love to you all.
