RGM Introducing – WeatheredMan and the Noise

Hiya folks thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today, grab a brew and take a seat.

You are very welcome

What made you decide to start the band / become a soloist?

A longstanding and incessant need to make a loud noise.

Introduce us all to the members and your musical history?

ME – producer, writer, narcissist

THE NOISE – best drummer in the rock biz

Did you have a nice tramlines?

I ran the gamut of all hairstyles. So much so that the hair lords decided that I didn’t deserve hair anymore. I now only own hats. With tramlines in.

How positive are you feeling now restrictions are loosening?

I’ve seen who is in charge of this. Not positive.

How much are you looking forward to playing live?

Bursting for it like a dinosaur in a spacesuit. A human’s spacesuit not a bespoke dinosaur one.

What advise would you give other artists starting out?

Have fun. Keep expectations low. Be nice to other bands. Clap their songs at soundcheck.

What’s your favourite song right now from another band currently on your local circuit?

Anything by Broken Piano

Do you sign up to any conspiracy theories?

I think conspiracy theories as an entity is problematic. By their very definition they are open to ridicule and dismissed out of hand – probably rightly in some cases. But I’ve heard plenty of legitimised theories that make less sense than “Elvis is alive”. See above comment on who is in charge.

What support is out there for new artists in Sheffield ?

Frank Wilkes at Kycker. Nicest man in the music business.

Who is inspiring you at the minute on the Sheffield unsigned scene?

Broken Piano again.

What was the most fun you have had on stage?

Playing at the Leadmill for live broadcast on the BBC was pretty stellar.

What was the worst experience on stage?

So, so many. One time, my then drummer made a mistake in a song and I spent the rest of the song changing the lyrics to moan about his performance. Not my finest hour. I love that guy. He forgave me (or couldn’t hear). I’ve been his best man since. Twice.

Tell us something about each member that you think people would be surprised about?

Me – I write K-Pop and had a number one record in 78 countries this year.

The Noise – His volume.

If you had to describe your band to an alien how would you describe them?

Friendly. Open to discussion. Have they got any technology that could make us even louder?

Which one of the band is the most unpredictable and why?

Just 2 of us. We’re steady as a rock.

Which one of the band is the biggest nightmare? (Just a bit of fun)

See above.

What’s your biggest achievement as a band/Artist?

That we are still going and have actually made an album. FYI I used to be a primary teacher and I’m correcting the tiny grammar errors in these questions. I’m so, so sorry. It’s a serious problem of mine.

What makes you stand out as a band/Artist?

Our age

Right now, what’s pissing you of the most? (Can’t say the virus )

See previous statements on the current leadership. I know I haven’t actually said anything but there isn’t a hard drive in existence that could cope with the amount of words I’d like to write.

What’s your favourite song to play live and why?

Shadows of the Downtime is a good place to start.

I hear you have a new single and album planned, what can you tell us about it?

A song that took seconds to write. You know when it’s all happening around you and the song finds it’s natural conclusion. Unbelievable drumming by the man (The Noise) himself. Lyrically I’m pretty angry right now. There’s not much solace to be found so better to put it in a song than in a heartfelt, tear-stained letter addressed to the person concerned. Except they aren’t concerned. And that’s the crux of the matter.

Album to follow with songs in a similar vein…

Talk me through the thought process of the album?

…I like noise…shall I do some noisy songs?…yes…can’t be bothered getting a band together…shall I just work with that drummer?…yes…clang, clang, smash…I think I need to buy a load of pedals…let’s record some of this…let’s record some more…wow, we’ve done an album…do you think anyone would enjoy this?…not sure…put it out anyway?…absolutely…

What was the recording process like?

Staggered. Bits and bobs over a couple of years. Hangs together ok though.

Why record an album? A lot of artists are going down the road of regular singles, just interested in your thoughts on committing to an album right now.

We’re old school. We want a bit of vinyl. And I honestly can’t remember a great rock album in the last 10 years. Where is the new AC/DC? Zeppelin? Why are Queens of the Stone Age the only band I can think of that are still doing this well? Surely rock isn’t dead? Is it dead? Don’t be dead! Come on young people!!

What was the biggest learning curve in writing the album?

Mixing those drum parts was an education. He hit’s them so hard. It’s like being slapped in the face with every snare.

Would you change anything now it’s finished?

That would not be in the spirit of what this band is. The songs happened how they happened. Job done. But probably yes if I listened back carefully. I’ve got producer OCD.

Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?

Mainly an apology for acting like the grammar police. This is not my first offence.

Thanks for doing us today folks, all the best and keep in touch.

Thank you so much Carl – it’s really appreciated!! If you ever need a 2 piece rock band for any occasion do let me know…
