British Rock duo Royal Blood played to a packed out Manchester Apollo last night. The band kicked off their tour in style with a sold out crowd eager to catch the ‘Figure it Out’ hitmakers in the flesh.
Support came from live wires ‘Hot Wax’ a punky trio, who warmed up the crowd with their energetic onstage antics and youthful, playfulness that went down a storm with tonight’s audience. The trio who hail from Hasting and were recently described by NME as ‘Britain’s next great guitar band’, played tracks from their latest release ‘Invite me, kindly’ which is their second EP.
With a powerful rhythm section and strong backline, this trio demand attention. Aggressive guitar riffs teamed with topical, intelligent lyrics make this band stand out a little from other bands in this genre (and there are quite a few about!), a strong female duo make up the guitar section and they are tight. I reckon you will see these guys on many a summer festival line up in 2024, watch this space.
Good old fashioned rock and roll has made a comeback of sorts in the form of longtime friends and now bandmates Royal Blood. For a duo they make a hell of a noise, and not even the outrageous excitement of tonight’s audience could not out do them.
The band kicked off the night with ‘Mountains at Midnight’ and kept the uptempo theme going with songs from all four of their albums dating back to 2014 with their titular album ‘Royal Blood’. Guitarist Mike Kerr, fresh from come controversy after comments made over the summer was on his best behaviour this evening and put on quite a show, sauntering around the stage and pulling some impressive shapes, and playing some pretty impressive guitar too. Keeping it all together was drummer Ben Thatcher, one of the best drummers I have seen in a while!
The band continue their UK tour playing North go the border this evening in Edinburgh, but they have plenty of dates left if you want to catch them (and Hot Wax), a top night of entertainment is guaranteed but be quick as these dates will sell out!
