Dark, brooding, claustrophobic, uncompromising. All words that could be used to describe “Please, Baby, Please” the haunting new single from Sheffield multi-instrumentalist Ruiz!. The second track to be taken from his forthcoming as-yet-untitled album, it’s a difficult track to pigeon-hole, not that one would want to.
“Please Baby Please” is a deep dark exploration of Ruiz!’ love of the shadier underbelly of psychedelic and alternative music, drawing on the likes of The The for inspiration.
Indeed, while a track as dark and as claustrophobic as this feels might not be an obvious choice for what’s already a dark and depressing winter (more so than usual), as far as tracks go “Please Baby Please” really is bringing something different to the table, and for that reason alone well worth checking out.
Of course, this is just one side of Ruiz!, a multifaceted artist whose forthcoming record promises to segue between ‘60s rock’n’roll, electronica, psych, and dark alternative rock. Ambitious? Certainly. But if “Please, Baby, Please” is anything to go by, then it goes without saying that Ruiz! Is an artist certainly up for the challenge.
