Særa Interview – RGM Introducing

Hiya særa, thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today. Grab a brew and take a seat.

Thanks for joining us today… Tell us a bit about where you are from and how you got into music?

Hii, I didn’t have a straight path into music making. As a small child (3-4 years old), according to my grandma, I was running around singing and making up songs and telling everyone that I would be a singer when I grew up. This confidence was gone by my teenage years. I went to afternoon music school in a small city in Hungary, and I spent years thinking I was not talented enough. Then for 10 years, I haven’t touched an instrument. Then I got to know some friends who slowly pulled me back into music starting 2019, and here we are!

What’s the live music scene like in Budapest right now?

It is very active; there are a vast number of options to choose from every night. It’s a bit hard on the performer’s side because it’s super oversaturated. But if you’re visiting, it’s great; you definitely won’t be bored.

Anyone we should be looking out for (bar you, of course)?

There is this band called S.E.A. , they play improvisation as you were mixing rock, jazz and electronic music. I promise you it’s captivating; they are also very underground.

What are your thoughts on all this talk about Indie poo going round the socials at the min?

I must say, I had to Google what this is… but in all: if you do any kind of music just for the clout, you are doing it wrong.

What’s the biggest thing you hate having to do to showcase your music?

Constantly pushing it to social media makes me shiver. But it’s a must, no?

What are your ambitions for the band?

As we are just starting up with a live band, my first and foremost ambition is to successfully make it to a stage, but I know it will happen. I have this all-girl band shaping up, and they are super cool girls; it’s going to be awesome.

What’s your view on the Music industry today?

It is a scary place. AI scares me. The noise on social media scares me. I do question myself often: “wtf am I doing?” trying to compete in this insane world for some attention. After all, even if you make music following your own vision, blah blah, at the end, if there is no audience to bring joy to… it’s very self-serving and pointless. To me, music is about sharing a moment, sharing an experience with others, not a lone wolf type of thing.

What’s the biggest thing you have learned recently as you progress with your music?

Don’t try to listen to everyone. Don’t try to please everyone. It’s impossible.

Let criticism in, but don’t let it consume you.

What’s currently in your ears and on rotation at the moment?

To & Fro from Mattafix, and Far from Any Road by The Handsome Family.

What was your worst experience on stage? Any funny stories to share?

It was an open mic situation; I geared up the courage and then just nothing came out of me properly, and neither my fingers on the guitar strings nor my voice were doing what they were supposed to. A bunch of people staring at me in silence… Very awkward.

Got any fun, funny stories from life on the road?

When the clutch has disappeared from under my feet while driving a minibus full of instruments and musicians… in the middle of the night… in the middle of traffic… on a slope. Haha, it wasn’t funny in the moment; I was shocked.

I hear you have new music. What can you tell us about it?

My new song ‘bathtubs & cigarettes’ is out indeed! I am very happy about it. I feel like I am getting closer to my own music; it’s becoming less of a wild experiment genre-wise and more of knowing what I want to hear. It’s a very dream pop/rock song that captures the essence of a fleeting romance, the illusion of late-night fun, from a period of time when I wanted to escape from all responsibilities and realities and just be consumed by the smoke, foam, and steam of the night.

What was the recording process like?

It was fun! It is always fun. Then lots of practising. Then some more fun. And excitement.

Would you change anything now it’s finished?

I am always doubting my singing abilities, so yes, maybe I would re-record the vocals.

Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?

Huh… no? Go to live gigs!
