Sciante Blues Fishermen Quilty

Sciante Blues ‘The fishermen of quilty’ – Single Review

Sciante Blues is the solo of project of Dundrum based musician Darren Devereux. I love the story behind the artist’s name it’s so thoughtful. “Sciante” means “to know” in the language of Esperanto which is the world’s most widely spoken constructed international auxiliary language. “Esperanto” means “one who hopes” so Devereux constructed his name from the idea of by accepting pain and the transformative capacity it can bring, people can live in hope through any life experience, including the darkest ones.

So Sciante Blues aims to lift spirits through the knowing of pain which I think is such a beautiful thing and well worth sharing.

And speaking of beautiful, his latest effort fits the bill. His latest track tells the story of the Fishermen of Quilty took part in a heroic act that helped to save the lives of sailors in the Leon XIII all the way back in 1907. I love a track that opens in a quirkier way with this one opening with seagulls squawking and the waves of the sea crashing together.

What makes this track so charismatic is Devereux’s accent shining through his vocals to make it so quintessentially Irish. The soft flowing acoustic guitars throughout are so relaxing and sound like clouds that carry you along the fishermen’s journey.

Strings dance underneath the guitars and steady drumbeats to drive a consistent foundation amongst the folk rock layers.

The instruments adapt to the lyrics as the verses have a more sinister atmosphere to detail out the storm and the despair the sailors found themselves in. But in the choruses, everything adopts a more hopeful tone to celebrate the heroic efforts of the fishermen.

This track was a very relaxing listen but you can also feel the celebratory elements of the story as part of what is a lovely new release from Devereux going into the summer.
