SELF ESTEEM PLAYS MANCHESTER – WHAT HAPPENED?

Self Esteem played two sold out shows this weekend at Manchester Academy. The hitmaker who has built up a ginormous following over the last few years due to her bold statement lyrics and equally eye catching on stage antics performed her greatest hits to delighted Mancunian audiences.

The show was fast paced and frantic with the singer/songwriter and her troupe of talented dancers (and a very impressive backing band) danced their way through some bizarre and wonderful routines, which really do make this act a must to see live,

Entering the stage dressed as nuns, Self Esteem greeted the crowd with a monologue before letting rip with a well choreographed rendition of ‘I Do and I Don’t Care’. The vocals (considering she rarely stays still, it was a full on work out, nuns in Adidas trainers n’ all) were sublime, and faultless. It is easy to see why and how Self Esteem has risen to the top ranks of pop stardom with such outlandish, tongue in cheek vocals and a unique stage show.

The highlights for many were tracks ’69’, ‘In Plain Sight’ and a surprise appearance from the iconic actress Julie Hesmondhalgh who came out for the track ‘If Not Now it’s Soon’. A lovely surprise and of course Julie recites two lines in the track so it was brilliant to see her at the hometown gig! The crowd were delighted to see the former Corrie star and made that well known through their warm reaction.

The show is a masterclass in stagecraft, the choreography, the vocals and the impressively increasing back catalogue that Self Esteem showcases thought a seventeen track set list. I urge people to run not walk to grab tickets next time she is on tour!
