Manchester-based indie outfit Sentient Robot is back with the new single “Too Soon”. Let me tell you that it has all you can imagine and hope for in a song: groove, indie rock vibes, shimmering guitars but also synth-driven textures.
From the very first seconds, the track locks you in with an irresistible groove. It instantly reminded me of the kind of background music you’d hear during one of those unforgettable moments in a great police TV series.
Built around punchy indie rock foundations, what really makes “Too Soon” unique is the way the band brings synths into the mix. Rather than competing with the guitars, the electronic elements complement them perfectly, making it sound like the best of both worlds. It’s a clever combination that makes it memorable.
Sentient Robot have always explored the strange relationship between humanity and technology and their blend of retro-inspired indie pop with modern electronic flourishes continues to reflect that identity. Influences such as Talking Heads, LCD Soundsystem and David Bowie can certainly be felt throughout but the band never sound like they’re simply copying their heroes.
The only aspect that slightly lets the track down is its chorus. Compared to the inventive instrumentation and infectious verses, it feels too simple with only the repetition of “It’s too soon”. It still works within the song, especially as it gets stuck in your head easily but it is a little bit disappointing compared to the rest of the track.
That said, if “Too Soon” is a sign of what’s to come from Sentient Robot, I, for one, can’t wait to hear where their unique blend of indie rock and synth-pop takes them next.
