Its an early starting gig with first band ‘She’s in the Trees’ on at 6:30pm. The three piece outfit shuffle on almost blinking in the daylight. But any early bird jitters are dispelled quickly, its a slick performance with electric and acoustic guitars mixing it with bass guitar and violin as they swop instruments to suit each song. Their sound floats off the stage with some talented guitar work that is ethereal and cosmic at the same time backed up by some classy violin and then there’s the voice.
The huge vocals emanate warmth that could heat a room and add a lived in feeling to She’s in the Trees folky psychedelia. Paige Kennedy hits the stage solo, strumming a Telecaster sometimes and other times letting her backing loops take over. Its danceable, funky, indie and lots of fun.
The crowd close to the stage having an impromptu party. Its easy to warm to Paige Kennedy, her self effacing humour (‘how to lose a crowd’ she says after describing her ‘posh’ upbringing) and her music is a lot of fun, catchy and easy to dance to. There’s a new album ‘Howl’ released last November and a lot of the songs from it are in this set.
She Drew the Gun drift between psychedelic pop and spoken word performance. The main vocals hum with a regular pulse of poetic rhythm adding significance to their lyrics. Its political and deep stuff covering the state of the world today, feminist issues and ultimately how a problem for one is a problem for all.
They are still keeping to a musical socialism. Here back in Liverpool its a home crowd and many sway and sing along to the songs. Musically they vary from the stripped down – again accenting the lyrics – to dense layers of almost a shoe gaze sound. There’s poppy hooks in there though and when they hit a darker tone it can be chilling and intense.
