SHOUN SHOUN LIVE IN MANCHESTER – WHAT HAPPENED?

Tonight starts well, Two Tonne Machete are banging songs out as we arrive and its a veritable garage fest of noise. High in energy with groovy hard hitting bass lines, twin guitar wall of noise and an assault of drums, topped with a singer with a passion for the job, add a very healthy dash of musical skill and this band are kicking well. The attack is so ferocious that its hard to put comparisons to, definitely from the Garage, maybe an Australian Garage at that.

Delightfully unhinged and yet musically tight as fuck. The duo, Satan’s Baby, hail from London. They start off with a very in your face Krautrock thing that builds up slowly. Gradually they bring in big chunking bass and the drums get more vibrant. Its cleverly put together, not in a self conscious manner, there’s intelligent manipulation of big rock riffs
and hypnotic Motorik sequences that blend easily together.

There’s drum mishaps, a stand falls and its handled with good humour and in no way dents the band from killing it. Its loud and intense with some sneakily placed lyrical good humour. I like Shoun Shoun, (‘shoon-shoon’), they never fail to mesmerise me and tonight their heady cocktail of New York meets Berlin meets Psych is bang on.

They describe themselves as ‘No wave. No logic. Somewhere between art rock and electronica’ and its a fair summation, there’s a lot of effects, keys, electric violins soaked in delays and unknown noises that come bouncing back
off the back wall and mix in with their sound. You live in their sound, its immersive and there’s high emotions emanating from the band, the songs have weight.
