A mild Friday evening after what has been a very loooooong week, so it was good to be about amongst happy gig goers heading to see the legendary Skunk Anansie at the Apollo.
I really like this venue, mainly because of their sloping floor that means you get a reasonable view should you happen to find yourself behind a tall person. This evening my view was from the photo pit, and very busy pit which usually means that this will be a visual spectacle, and it certainly was!
It was another sell out evening with this venue attracting some stellar bands for their summer season. The warmer temperature outside meant that the inside was a very sweaty affair, with people crammed up against the barrier to get a decent view of Skin and co.
The leader of the pack, dressed in a long hooded cloak entered the stage last to the huge cheers, and put on a spellbinding performance for track one, an earsplitting performance, and a massive dose of sensory overload which whipped the crowd into a frenzy. Skin knows how to work a crowd, the cloak was flung onto the floor at the end of ‘This Means War’, before politely greeting the crowd and cracking straight into track two ‘Charlie Big Potato’.
The musicianship is outstanding, with Skin taking to the drums later on in the set, and allowing the guitar players Cass and Ace to shine at the front.
This is far one of the most energetic sets I have seen, Skin is relentless in energy and stage presence, owning the whole floor with an impressive series of dance moves, dominating the large stage and playing up to the crowd. The set list is immense too with a nice little Led Zeppelin cover in the generous encore ‘Whole Lotta Love’ which suits the band and the evening perfectly. Covers do not always work well but this one does and is followed seamlessly by the final track of the evening ‘The Skank Heads (Get Off Me).
This was my first time seeing this band live, and I am certain it will not be my last, they made their mark and left an impression that will last a lifetime…see what all the fuss is about below!
