SNOW PATROL PLAY MANCHESTER’S CO-OP LIVE – WHAT HAPPENED?

Snow Patrol have recently made a return to the spotlight playing a number of festival dates last summer, most notably headlining Tramlines Festival back in July. The band who dominated the charts back in the 2000’s were today back in the limelight at the UK’s largest indoor venue to perform their greatest hits.

Frontman Gary Lightbody the only remaining original member of the band was in fine voice as the band played their way through some of their finest work, It has been seven years since the band released an album, but they are back and better than ever with their latest offering ‘Wildness’.

The latest album laments the struggles of Lightbody’s battle with depression and writers block. The bands sound is as relevant as it always has been, timeless indie rock that still frequents all the major airwaves. ‘Run’ is as powerful as it has always been, with a beautiful visual moment thanks to the venues impressive lighting system and of course the crowd doing their best to harmonise in the ‘light up’ part of the chorus.

Undoubtably their most famous track ‘Chasing Cars’ comes just before the band break before a two track encore. I was never a huge fan of the track as it was played to death on every advert and covered by the masses, however, sung by the original band in this impressive venue makes it a little more bearable!

Finishing off the evening the band treated the crowd to two more songs, ‘But I’ll Keep Trying’ and ‘Just Say Yes’. The simplistic set up of guitars and keys, and Lightbody’s vocals made the whole evening intimate and a warmth of nostalgia was in the air as we were taken back to a time when indie rock seemed to dominate every aspect of the charts. It is clear that Snow Patrol are moving in a slightly different direction musically, but ultimately they remain the epitome of indie rock and roll.
