Sophia Garvey - Ur Just a Man

Sophia Garvey “Ur Just a Man” – Single Review

London based, Sophia Garvey has a new track, titled Ur Just a Man. It is her latest release in a string of singles from this year. This one has a raucous and high energy. If there is one thing you could say about this track it’s that it is in no way boring or generic. It’s a tune.

It stands out with its noisy attitude, the punchy snare punctuating the rhythm, which quite simply cements it is a punk song. As does the heavily accented voice of Sophia Garvey that also feels very britpop. It could easily be mistaken for Elastica.

There are also softer backing vocals behind the ones at the forefront. As they usually do, this helps fill out the track, much like the guitar arpeggios that fill out the track without being overbearing.

Those backing vocals also probably makes it more palatable to the causal listener. Toning down the mild aggression that seeps through.

And talking of vocals, it’s hard not to note Shaun Ryder being on the song. An absolute icon from the music world, his parts also emphasise the punky edge. They too are pretty shouty but it’s all just good fun. Plus mixing the retro with the new, legends with up and coming artists, it’s the ideal blend.

At times it feels like Sophia Garvey is talking to the listener. You have no choice but to be held captive by this because it feels like you are being personally spoken to. Plus you can hear exactly what she is saying, which are a sassy mash of lyrics that take a shot at men. There’s something amusing about the attitude behind the words.

Ur Just a Man is a song that feels informal and very on-a-level, especially as even the title is written in text speak. Again it just adds to the fun nature, and showing in every way that it is a great track that radiates good vibes.
