Wow. Local band, Stageminus, absolutely smashed it up with an hour long headline set at Hyde Park Book Club, Leeds. It was menacing, ferocious, and fully dialled throughout with heavy grunge fuelled energy. The scent of 90s US alternative rock was certainly alive; think Nirvana, Pearl Jam, even Monster era R.E.M.
I have really enjoyed seeing these guys develop as a band over the past couple of years. This gig was kind of a full circle moment, as I first saw them as the opening act at the same venue; even then they showed promise with their tunes and sarcastic put downs between tracks. In reality, they are the loveliest lads who absolutely live and breathe their musical craft.
The set opened with the surprising (and very welcome) inclusion of guest star Alistair from Glasgow providing some extraordinary violin work alongside the familiar heavy grunge rock sounds of which the boys specialise. This created a delicious mash up of sounds. He returned later for a couple of other tracks.
The set featured a good mix of classics and newer tracks. Lonely Monday and Sometimes I from the latest EP were particular highlights that demonstrated a broader depth to their songwriting and musical style. Infectiously catchy choruses, cool lead guitar splashes, and still the heavy clattering drums. Special mention for Charlie’s really confident vocal delivery; he often reminds me (in the best way) of a young Brian Molko.
It was the longstanding tracks like Burning Through, Mr Man, and Seen It All Before (JUMP) that created the biggest crowd reactions. Joe absolutely ripping it up on the drum kit; Ben producing some brutally heavy bass lines; Charlie outstanding with his thrilling guitar licks. This set off an incredible sweaty mosh pit through the final part of the set.
I am delighted that these lads will be joining Geordie boys Strays on tour in both Newcastle and Leeds in a few weeks. With the incredible Weave on the line-up too, these shows will be incendiary. Can’t wait!
