Friday night down Peter Street was busier than usual and there was a buzz in the air as the hotly anticipated weekend of 90’s legends Supergrass were preparing for their first of two sold out shows. Fans eager to kickstart their weekend were queuing way down the street, some sporting bucket hats and raring to go.
On the inside of one of Manchester’s most loved venues it was chaos with fans packed to the rafters ready for the lads to take to the stage at 9pm. The crowd were suitably warmed up by a Reverend and the Makers acoustic set, and as the lights dimmed, a large face glowed across the back of the stage of Gaz Coombes and the band made their way on stage to massive cheers from the crowd.
The band were sounding tight with Coombes’s voice in fine form and the nostalgia kicked in very early on as they played ‘Alright’ within the first ten minutes. This really set the crowd up and although they were tightly crammed in, arms were in the air as the songs famous chords kicked in.
The set list was a mixture of old and newer material with the band celebrating thirty years of ‘I should Coco’. Being eight years old when it came out, I fondly remember dancing to ‘Alright’ at many school discos, and of course the other single releases including ‘Man Size Rooster’ and ‘Caught By the Fuzz’.
This would not be a Supergrass gig without their other famous tracks, so the four piece (the band became a four piece in 2002 with the addition of Rob Coombes on keys) treated us all to their 1999 release ‘Pumping On Your Stereo’ and as this started, Brit Pop was back, just for a fleeting few minutes and it was the 90’s again, and then all too soon it was over, and we were back decades later in 2025, no doubt feeling a little bit more alright as the we stepped back onto Peter Street into the muggy evening.
