Addressing a period of pent-up aggression brought about by a controlling nameless character, ‘Wounded’ is the debut single from Liverpool’s SYLLO.
Though its narrative could easily have lent itself to an overtly heavy or indeed aggressive composition, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Instead SYLLO has succeeded in creating something that’s sleek, soulful and far more accomplished than a completely DIY debut release has any right to be.
Three minutes of atmospheric neo-soul that effortlessly brings to mind artists such as Rag’N’Bone Man, or even at times latter-day Arctic Monkeys, ‘Wounded’ is as much as a statement of intent from the Liverpool solo artist as it is a debut single.
Coming in with a steadfast duality of chunky bass and weighty percussion, the first thing that’s noticeable about the track is its exquisite production quality, something that continues throughout its entirety. The second thing that’s worth mentioning is the timeless nature of SYLLO’s voice, something both lends itself perfectly to the genre, while setting him apart from much of his Merseyside contemporaries.
Though ‘Wounded’ is in itself an exciting prospect, what’s perhaps more exciting is the idea of could follow it. For now though, what we do know is that it’s a bold first release from an artist that harbours plenty of cross over appeal. Let’s hope it won’t be long before we hear from SYLLO again.
