Ten Eighty Trees appear to be continuing the trend they set in 2018. More singles. More Alt/Pop-Rock bangers. More goodness. ‘Lip Service’, though, doesn’t quite fit with last year’s trilogy, and that my friends, is a very good thing. Ten Eighty Trees are developing, and I dig it.
I’ll start by mentioning that isn’t my first rodeo when it comes to reviewing new music from Ten Eighty Trees; my review of their 3rd single ‘Before The Fall’ was a thoroughly enjoyable experience.
No, they haven’t distanced themselves miles and miles from what they did so well in 2018, so don’t flick this track on expecting some post-punk 90 second assault…it’s still gonna rock, and it’s still gonna be as catchy as any pop song out there. But there’s something new here that’s got me excited, and I can’t quite work out what it is. Maybe it’s a more-raw sound? Or maybe it’s how the guitars drive the song forward? Is it the soaring chorus that lifts the track to a new level? I just don’t know! I just know that all that knitted together has produced something so listenable it’s unfair.
This isn’t middle of the road though. This fucking rocks hard and grooves left, right and centre. The culmination of all this, the final 30 seconds of ‘Lip Service’ that Ten Eighty Trees treat you to is H.U.G.E. Heavy, aggressive, ‘I-don’t-give-a-fuck’, riffy…YES. It’s big, it’s bold, and it’s bang on. Top notch.
