Aberdeen four-piece The Broken Creels have dropped their latest release “Moon Howler” – describing it on their social media as “A dark psychedelic howl for the strangest of times”.
The artwork itself depicts just that, an illustration of many people looking up at the moon in horror, distress and maybe having a howl themselves – either way, consider us intrigued.
It starts straight off with a big drum beat and this psychedelic-rock-like twang that settles you into the track, although there’s nothing settling about it once the vocals kick in, but I think that is the desired effect.
The vocals are quite deep and I do feel like they get a little lost within the music at times, but it doesn’t mean it doesn’t work, in a way, it kind of goes with the themes of being dragged into the howl if you like.
The musicianship of the track is to be admired, there is a lot going on but you don’t get overwhelmed or lost in it, it just sort of leads you in and throughout the track and dips in and out of different tempos and it does give each band member their own bit of spotlight in the song, the guitar solo at around three minutes in (ish) – is something to be admired and the drumbeat is consistently energetic throughout.
It does take a few listens to really hone in on the lyrics but only because the music just kind of takes you away a bit, but either way, I was having a good time.
The ending has the perfect slow (for this type of track anyway) drop off and fade too and it is nicely tied off and to be honest, to say it was four minutes long, it absolutely flew by!
A decent track with a good mix of genre, lots of energy and even if you’re not inclined to a bit of rock music, it’s an easy listen.
