The Darkness Live at New Century Manchester

THE DARKNESS LIVE IN MANCHESTER – WHAT HAPPENED?

A sold out New Century Hall made way for glam rock band The Darkness as fans of the four piece headed to one of Manchester’s newest venues. The venue itself was perfect for this legendary rock band who have recently embarked on an anniversary tour to celebrate twenty years since their first release.

I had never seen this venue so busy, and struggled to make my way to the photo pit. We were pre-warned from front of house that there will be fire and confetti, so it was reassuring to see that Justin Hawkins and his pals were still all about the flamboyant.

As the band took to the stage, the crowd roared their appreciation which spurred Hawkins on to perform some outrageous gymnastics, but not before chastising the crowd to ‘put their phones away and live in the moment’! It was a night full of celebrations as it was guitarists Dan Hawkins birthday too so spirits and camaraderie were running high.

The band were as tight as ever (not quite s tight as Justin’s leather spandex) but tight and on form. The band played tracks from their careers which has spanned twenty years, and before they hit the big time was funded by Justin Hawkins’s short lived jingle writing career. Not many jingles were were written before the band were catapulted to fame, and became known for Justin’s ridiculous five octave vocal range which was on fine form tonight.

Lucky for this crowd, we have hit mid December and advent is upon us, which meant that one of their most well known tracks ‘Christmas Time (Don’t Let the Bells End)’ was super poignant and met with great enthusiasm *the roof nearly blew off) and I am pretty sure the foundations shook when the band started up that infamous intro to ‘I Believe in a Thing Called Love’.

The evening ended with a nod to a musical icon as the band covered ‘Love on the Rocks’ by Led Zeppelin, before making their way onwards to continue the tour in the South of England. The band could have easily sold this Manchester venue over two or three times, so if you wish to catch this lot this side of Christmas act fast!
