THE DIRT LIVE IN MANCHESTER – WHAT HAPPENED?

It has been a whole year since Mossley based duo The Dirt released their ‘Agitator’ album, and what a year it has been in the psyched up/ funked up /spoken word /guitar riffed land of Jack and Sachiko.

Fresh from a tour with EMF (not too shabby) especially for a band who have only been on the scene for two years, they have sent shock waves through the punk scene of the North and caught the eye of many a promoter. Perhaps one of the most hard working acts out there, they know how to plug and the pluggin’ is paying off!

This evening is a cosy affair in a pub that is so much more than a pub to The Dirt. Jack (as Leon the Pig Farmer) performed one of his first spoken word gigs right here, and of course it has sentimental meaning as this is the very place that that the pair celebrated their marriage amongst close friends and family, many of whom are here this evening.

Jack is known to curate top line-ups and this evening is certainly an ear rupturing affair with the one and only Blob Halford kicking off the proceedings with his unique style of rock and roll. I have never known a solo artist perform quite like Blob. The guitar solos are nearly as legendary as the audience interaction, I mean, who on a Tuesday evening does not want to consider which animal they would most like to fuck? (Blob’s is a dolphin in case you were wondering – for reasons best left out of this review).

Jack has an eye for up and coming talent and we are treated to a fine selection of spoken worders who are just as passionate and astute as you would expect. It is a welcoming interlude from Blob’s high octane shenanigans, sandwiched between two notoriously high energy sets.

Jack steadies himself, preparing to launch into The Dirt, Sachiko in contrast remains calm and collected, pure ying and yang here but it is so fucking effective. They kick off with a brand new song, Jack pounding on an electric drum kit and doing star jumps, having a fight with a microphone stand at one point and completely losing himself in the beautiful guitar riffs played by Sachiko, who barely seems to acknowledge Jack’s relentless energy, just at one with her impressive collection of guitar pedals!

It is easy to tell which members of the audience are Dirt virgins so to speak. Some look on in utter amazement at this blast of pyschadelica that hits you square in the face, some just look shell shocked, but the regular Dirt attendees bop along in solidarity, the words have meaning to many, and they pack a punch…

The band are buzzing to announce their next major Manchester gig will be at the legendary Night & Day on Oldham street on the 31st of October, making 2024’s halloween one to remember!
