Down into the dark basement at the Peer Hat and suddenly its not so dark, there’s some new lights I’ve not seen before and a groovy psychedelic backdrop! You can see the bands.
Avid Fan describe themselves as Indie Punk and there’s a lot of both in there. They are sharp, comfortable on stage and with the audience and have killer songs. They veer between a noise rock post punk sound and yeah a bit Indie too but they have some excellent hooks and a great vocal performance that delivers them. Creative and occasionally veering towards Levitation era
Hawkwind with catchy riffs and clear melodies that they flesh out in different directions. Killing Joke also seem to be on their influence list and a hint of Gang of Four. They have a style that keeps it all coherent but aren’t afraid of changing things frequently and radically.
Cherry Fuzz Club from Leeds are a whirl of noise, punky then funky, jagged post noise musical exclamation marks bang out that push boundaries and build up to savage peaks before grooving back on down to bass led almost funky rhythms. They incite the crowd to dance, jump about, join in (dragging folk on stage with them) and break into the audience space with walk arounds whilst the groove keeps building. If Jackson Pollock had made music instead of art it would have sounded like this.
The Dirt seem to be everywhere at the moment, the Mosley based man and wife duo seem to be in their stride with a constant stream of gigs and festival appearances. They play most of their soon to be released album ‘Monkey Punch’ before closing on some older material. Its a constant stream of guitars looping in on themselves and a frantic singer come shouter throwing more words out than most could remember.
The cool calm of Sachiko on guitar, calculatedly hitting a huge array of effects pedals contrasts with the wilder front person Jack who never lets the tempo down and keeps it all at a manic level throughout the set. Simple drum machine/drum pad beats keep it all surging forward and there’s an amount of cathartic joy to be had from experiencing them live.
