The Elusives Interview - RGM Introducing

The Elusives Interview – RGM Introducing

Hiya Joe, (The Elusives), thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today. Grab a brew and take a seat.

Thanks for joining us today… Tell us bit about where you are from and how you got into music?

Hello, Joe Brady, Vocalis/ Drummer with The Elusives from Dublin, Ireland.

I was Born in the early 80’s into a family that were all music fans, a big family 9 of us, every one of them loved different genres. My Dad would be playing The Stones, Mam Motown, sisters and brothers, from A-Ha….. Dance, The Beatles, Ultra sonic (remember them?) The Doors, to the Jam… the list goes on, It was 60s, 70s 80,s and 90s all the way. Every room in the house had a different sound coming from it. I had no choice but to “get into music”.

I started with a drum kit and emulating Reni (The Stone Roses) well trying! Me Ma was a great singer but my Da was hopeless not really sure what side I inherited!

What’s the live music scene like in Dublin right now?

It’s not the same as it was in the 90’s that’s for sure, me and Paul start gigging together then. You could find a stage anywhere to play, people went into to Town, I always thought it was buzzing then, now there seems to be less and less venues, less and less “bands”. That said there is still some great venues and decent promotors. Also some bands and solo artists coming through Ireland at the moment are very good, the war on Ai entertainment maybe? Not sure but something is changing.

Anyone we should be looking out for (bar you, of course)?

Hard to look out for us, I mean we have only played live 3 times in 12 years together.

Few and far between I’d say! The street leagues from Dublin, they released their debut album the historian in the wake of their Drummer who passed untimely. I really like what they’ve done (and me and Paul play on it). Give Alpine Skies a whirl also, good friends of ours, released their debut “inspired conflicts” this year.

Do you think it’s easy to become a victim of our surrounds sometimes?

It is what it is!. I thought we had a real shot with a label in the late 90’s (a different band me and Paul were in together). It didn’t happen for lots of reasons I won’t go in to now.

It can be very easy to forget why you make or play music. I think that’s why The Elusives works for us, 3 gigs in 12 years, soon to be 1 song released in 12 years and now we will throw a few out in the coming months. I’m not sure we conform fully to be victims, if that makes sense? We’ve always done our own thing in that regard.

What are your ambitions for the band?

Haven’t done a proper festival yet, I’d love to do a few festivals. First get these singles out. We have 3 planned with a full album release just before summer next year. Then we launch a few live shows. After that, hopefully get the festivals done. We need to get a line-up to help Paul, Laura and I make the live shows happen, cover all the music parts first, so that process will start soon.

What’s your favourite social media platform to use and why?

Don’t know what I am doing with Snap-chat so not that, I’m terrible with social media to be honest, Em, Insta is probably the easiest. Facebook just seems to give me bad news. I’d like to get more familiar with Tik Tok, that seems to work for bands to promote music I hear?

We believe it’s essential to have a presence on Facebook, Instagram and X to introduce yourself to all the different types of audiences out there, what’s your thoughts on that?

I think you need a social media presence absolutely, bands are getting noticed by clicks, likes and shares, why not if you know that game and play it well.

What’s your view on the Music industry today?

I’m not a fan of any industry really. Where the arts are involved I try to see them as two different things. Not sure if you get me here, but when I listen to a song I don’t think of the industrial aspects of it, just the sound, the words, the vibes will do, not how much and how many like it etc or made from it.

What’s your thoughts on AI generated music?

I’m supposed to be against it and I am but I heard a Michael Jackson Bob Marley mash up and thought it was great. That said I really don’t want to see creative people being dissolved and artists being scraped of their music or even their livelihoods?

I’m against Ai generated music for a hell of a lot more reasons than I am for it.

What’s the biggest thing you have learned recently as you progress with your music?

Our debut release meant We had to write, record, produce, mix, master, find a distributor, promote, set up social media, irsc codes, copyright….. there is a lot involved. Thankfully the song has gotten fantastic reception and there’s some really good ones to come in my honest and humble opinion so it’s worth it. A Lot to learn.

What’s currently in your ears and on rotation at the moment?

Right now, Bowie! It’s like phases of the greats isn’t it? I somehow morphed from synthwave into Tony Joe White Into Bowie. It could be the Hollies next week or Thin Lizzy! Paul and Laura have very different music influences which really works when we write our stuff.

What was your worst experience on stage? Any funny stories to share?

Too many funnies! Played a college circuit in Wolverhampton/Birmingham back in the very early 00’s. The plan was we would come on stage via a lift from the 1st floor to the 2nd. One of the lads pressed the 3rd floor. Lift opened for us only looking at an empty kitchen canteen. We scrambled back in to the lift to the convulsions of the crowd on the 2nd floor. Hilarious! We blew the Mains CB in the first song too, by the time we got power back on the students had took off, I think the singer did too!

(We were to come from) is this a question?

Got any fun, funny stories from life on the road?

I was always too drunk to be honest, it was always funny I think. I still get reminded of a few things that happened. Especially by some good friends that travelled with us. I am very responsible now but there is always something funny or exciting about to happen when we “go live”. I can relate 100percent to spinal tap , the commitments and strange fruit (still crazy), lets put it that way.

I hear you have your debut release coming soon. What can you tell us about it?

Our debut single “Run Away Into The Night” is being released on October 9th. So far anyone in the media and the good radio dj friends of ours have responded really well to it. Probably better than expected if I am honest.

The song is caught somewhere between 4 or 5 genres so it’s being accepted on to playlists all over the place. It’s laced with nostalgia for anyone into the 70’s and 80’s inspirations. it’s energetic, its “dreamy” to quote some media personal. It’s young lovers running away together and remembering your youth while chasing your future.

I can’t explain it anymore, the people will have to tell us what they think I suppose.

What was the recording process like?

Paul is our man, My song brother! He is responsible for all the instruments on it except the drums, that’s me. Other than that Paul played and recorded everything. In my opinion one of the most talented musicians ever to come out of Dublin. I take the lead vocals on “Run Away into the night” with Laura and Paul Backing. In other songs we switch the play. Either way we record at home, zero budget and its always a chuckle. Again we don’t really conform in a lot of ways.

Would you change anything now it’s finished?

You’ll always change something after it’s boxed off but that’s part of it. I actually like faults or natural mistakes (to a point) in our recordings. It keeps us real and sometimes gives you leverage to slag the other band members about faults.

Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?

Be aware of the bad but Focus more on The good in the world, theres great stuff around us.

Share the love, as much as you can.

It’s All About To Happen!
