Claire Glover reporting for RGM, attended this hilarious and hugely entertaining new comedy show at The Hope Street Theatre in Liverpool. This superb comedy play captures a mix of fascinating historical storytelling, inventive comedy, and impressive performances. This review highlights how the production transforms a little-known, real event form 1908 into a fast-paced, hilarious spectacle. The New York to Paris motorcar race.
The writing credits go to Rob Hardie and Elliot Bailey, co-founders and owners of Guilty Applause, a North West-based theatre company. Their script balances historical accuracy with creative liberties, resulting in a show packed with absurd twists, comical, exaggerated rivalries, and larger-than-life characters. The audience is strapped in for a ride of nonstop laughter as the production brings this captivating race to life.
A charismatic reporter serves as their guide, setting the scenes with historical context while keeping the humour sharp and engaging. The story portrays the race consisting of six teams and the unbelievable sometimes outrageous events,
they encounter on the way. Including cars and teams representing four different nations, France, Germany, Italy and America. They embark on a journey filled with bizarre challenges, strange encounters, and intense but amusing interactions with each other.
Despite a limited budget, the brilliantly written production thrives on ingenuity. Clever use of props and a live musician contribute to the show’s charm, proving that resourceful staging can be just as effective as elaborate set designs. The visual and verbal humour ranges from deadpan and slapstick to being tinged with surreal moments, ensuring a dynamic and engaging experience.
The cast of five actors take on an astounding 40+ roles, showcasing outstanding acting skill, versatility, comic timing and impressive accents. The race is filled with fierce competition and unexpected challenges, from battling snowstorms and getting stuck in a mud swamp to a stint in a Russian jail.
However, amid the chaos, a touching love story unfolds between two team members, adding warmth and depth to the comedy. This unique look back in time is incredibly funny, engaging and an absolute delight to watch. With its mix of history, adventure, and nonstop laughs, The Great Race is a masterclass in storytelling and comedic theatre. It’s well worth a watch. No spoilers on who wins though—just keep an eye out for its next run. Who knows? Maybe even a real-life New York to Paris tour?
