The Lottery Winners are without a doubt one of the hardest working bands out there at the moment, and not only are they working hard, they are working alongside some absolute icons of the music world. The four piece are RGM favourites and it has been a total privilege to watch their gradual rise to the top over the last few years, and it genuinely could not have happened to nicer people!
The band are in the midst of yet another sold out tour, and last night they graced the stage of Liverpool’s Academy. The band were supported by indie rockers The Covasettes who had made quite an impression on the crowd and certainly warmed them up ready for the headliners. The Northern four piece are also seemingly on their own rise to fame having built up a fan base and with the opportunity of this esteemed support slot, are no doubt gaining fans across the UK. Certainly a band for indie fans to keep on their radar.
Entering to Robbie Williams’s iconic track ‘Let Me Entertain You’, a sure nod to the HUUUUUGE support slot the Lottery Winners have deservingly bagged later this year with the man himself, the four winners walked on stage to massive cheers. From the crowd you could tell that many of these fans were regular Lottery Winner gig attendees.
I must mention Mr Rylance, who never ever fails to make me laugh. A Lottery Winners show is not just music, it is a stand up comedic affair on a nightly basis with Rylance’s ability to charm and insult, self depreciate, and mock his bandmates and their success with hilarious antics. Tonight he was sporting cowboy boots which were immediately showcased to the crowd in a series of Elvis style poses. He had been warned by manager Dave to tone down the chit chat, which of course he ignored!
Comedic shenanigans aside, this band can perform. Their stage presence emits warmth and familiarity, like a massive hug or a shit load of prozac in melodic form, it is no wonder that many fans follow these guys all over the country, the NHS should consider prescribing their live shows as a form of therapy!
The songs are a delight, and when Rylance manages to abstain from being an all round entertainer, he does have a bloody lovely voice, showcased particularly well in ‘Favourite Flavour’ and his writing abilities shine in “Letter to Myself’ a track I have played to pupils in my art classes as a way of motivating them!
On leaving the venue there was a joyous vibe in the air, as fans defended into the chilly evening no doubt spirits lifted after another dose of Lottery Winning magic. Go see what all the fuss is about, check out their website below.
