Hiya Matt, thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today. Grab a brew and take a seat.
Tell us a bit about where you are from and how you got into music?
I’m Matt AKA The Ocean Beneath and I’m from Leeds in the North of England. I’ve been playing music is some way pretty much since I was 16 but just taken a little bit of time away recently to get some stuff in order.
What’s the live music scene like in Leeds right now?
Leeds has an amazing live music scene, from the Brudenell Social to the Wardrobe there is something happening every night and you’ve not got to go far to find the next up and coming band who are about to blow up.
Anyone we should be looking out for (bar you, of course)?
I reckon keep an eye on September Suns, Lines of Flight and Jessica Marcella.
What are your ambitions for the band?
So the next year I’m just planning on putting out a lot more music. I was going to aim for monthly releases but that’ll probably fall flat, there’s so much involved with releasing music now. But yeah I have so much material ready to go, I’m just going to start getting it out there again.
What’s your favourite social media platform to use and why?
Probably Instagram but I don’t really use it as much as artists need to these days. I try build it up before releases then inevitably fall off and have to start again 😂
We believe it’s essential to have a presence on Facebook, Instagram and X to introduce yourself to all the different types of audiences out there, what’s your thoughts on that?
Yeah it’s a given and 100% a requirement now, hard but true.
What’s your view on the Music industry today?
On a whole everything is great, there’s so much good music out there and it takes seconds to find with the internet, honestly try searching for a genre, city and the word music you might just find your next favourite band.
What’s your thoughts on AI generated music?
Honestly it has no bearing on me at all, seems popular to point at AI and blame it for stuff right now but that’ll go too. Nothing will replace artists and the uses AI has to help is brilliant, use it for the shit jobs you don’t want to do.
What’s the biggest thing you have learned recently as you progress with your music?
Tiny drops in a huge ocean, learn it every day and won’t stop. But yeah there’s so much music available you just gotta keep enjoying the process and doing what you love.
What’s currently in your ears and on rotation at the moment?
Been listening to some Norwegian singers recently ARY and Moyka. Also just got back from Ibiza with a whole playlist of afro house stuff I heard so Sounds Of Rituals, Santi & Tugce and Grandbrothers.
I hear you have new music. What can you tell us about it?
Like I said, I’ve had some time off but You Must Remember is me coming back to life almost. The track has been knocking around since about 2019 but I lost a lot of work on this track and others a couple of years ago on a failed hard drive. Anyhow this is the rebuilt version I just couldn’t move away from and I think it’s the perfect transitional track to give people a taste of what’s coming later in the year.
Would you change anything now it’s finished?
I changed this track a million times, in the end it’s just got to stop 😂
