The Parachute Testers Interview – RGM Introducing

Hiya Parachute Tester Dave Redfearn, thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today. Grab a brew and take a seat.

Thanks for joining us today… Tell us bit about where you are from and how you got into music?

Born and bred in Leeds UK and now living in a lovely little place called Bastardstown in South East Ireland! My love of listening and playing music came from my Dad playing Buddy Holly and Beatles LPs and my bothers fascination with Queen.

What’s the live music scene like in Ireland right now?

Bastardstown is a rural coastal village so is a little quiet, although there’s a good Ukulele group which I run! Back in my hometown of Leeds things are buzzing and we are looking forward to playing a sold out show at The Hyde Park Book Club later this month.

Anyone we should be looking out for (bar you, of course)?

Dave Pilla is an old favourite from my hometown. Well worth hunting out his music.

Do you think its easy to become a victim of of our surrounds sometimes?

It really depends on what the surrounds are. You can be a victim but also be inspired. If you are lucky enough to be able to experience new places and people and travel I think that’s a really healthy thing.

What are your ambitions for the band?

We are on a mission to reach as many ears as we an across the world while enjoying the adventure of writing, recording and playing music.

Whats your favourite social media platform to use and why?

Live gigs! If that can be classified as a social platform! In the online word they all have pros and cons! Probably Insta if I was forced to choose!

We believe its essential to have a presence on Facebook, Instagram and X to introduce yourself to all the different types of audiences out there, what’s your thoughts on that?

All useful platforms to spread the word about your music to new ears but comes with the distraction of spending a lot of time focusing on social media rather than the art of writing great songs and playing music.

What’s your view on the Music industry today?

Both hugely terrifying and massively exciting in equal measure. The most positive thing is that people all over the world can now access your music easily and potentially fall in love with it.

Whats your thoughts on AI generated music?

I actually heard a song this morning and was enjoying it and then something clicked in my head and on a bit of research found out it was AI. I’m sure it’s here to stay, like any music some will be good and a lot will be awful but each person will decide what they like.

It won’t stop me enjoying making and producing music anyway.

Whats the biggest thing you have learned recently as you progress with your music?

Always follow your instincts and go with what moves you and excites you both when creating and marketing what you do.

What’s currently in your ears and on rotation at the moment?

Romare, Bdrmm, Byland, The Breath, Mammal Hands,  Aether Speaker and always Bill Withers

What was your worst experience on stage? Any funny stories to share?

Playing a gig at London 2012 Olympics in the Olympic Park to just the soundman! It was funny as everybody was inside the stadium on the super Saturday and as we finished the first tune a massive cheers came from the stadium.. Mo Farah had just won the 10000m – so to all bad.

Got any fun, funny stories from life on the road?

Playing a gig at a robot factory was fun, and meeting characters, one audience member in particular tried to get in the van at the end of the night and asked where we were playing next. He seemed to think he was in the band.

I hear you have new music. What can you tell us about it?

Our new single ‘Black Dog Runs Wild’ is broadcasting on all channels now. It’s a tune all about battling with mental health fluctuations, the light and the dark, the highs and the lows. It’s on the heavier side of what we do, can’t wait to play it on tour.

What was the recording process like?

Great, and spread between various locations! The guitars were taken from the very first home demo as they sounded really raw. Drums were recorded overlooking the Irish Sea at the magical Black Mountain studios through an old SSL vintage desk and we finished off the vocals on The Isle Of Arran in Scotland.

Would you change anything now it’s finished?

Not a jot

Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?

Our debut album ‘Halfway To Everywhere’ is out on October 30th Vinyl / CD / Cassette & / Download and Streaming! Join us on our musical mission.
