THE SKIDS – LIVE IN MANCHESTER, WHAT HAPPENED?

Scottish punk legends The Skids took to Manchester’s Academy 3 on Saturday night and play a blinder of a set to a near sold out crowd. Currently, in the midst of a UK tour, the band received a warm welcome and professed their love of the city throughout the gig.

There was a mix of old and new material and fans were happy to see the line up include original singer Richard Jobson and original bassist William Simpson. Jobson is an old school frontman, mixing songs with classic jokes and anecdotes which the crowd lapped up. It is always heart-warming when a singer/band takes the time to talk interact with the crown, and Jobson is a pro at this, funny, warm and clearly chuffed to be back on tour.

The band kicked off with ‘Charade’ released in 1979 quickly followed by their latest material from their new album ‘Destination Dusseldorf’ released this month, their first release since ‘Song’s from a Haunted Ballroom in 2021’. In true Skids style, the new material is upbeat and energetic. Jobson never stops dancing, and comments that the mid song banter is a way of getting his breath back! The energy was impressive and could easily put younger bands to shame.

Since reforming The Skids have proven to be a force of nature and are collating a new fan base which was clear from the audience mix of young and old revellers. The older material caused a stir, and ‘Into the Valley’ was met with rapturous applause and cheers, perhaps the song the band are most well known for.

The band are hitting most major cities and towns on this current tour and going by the turn out at Friday’s event, tickets are selling rapidly. The band start the promotional leg of the tour in line with the release of ‘Destination Dusseldorf’. This will see the band play to more intimate venues around the UK from early June.
