Last night the Slow Country took to the stage at The Star and Garter in Manchester for an atmospheric evening packed with character. The Star and Garter is one of Manchester’s most infamous grassroots venues, rich in culture and renowned for its contributions to the Manchester music scene. The raw, unapologetic charm was the perfect home for tonight’s show.
First up was Velvetine, a London-based alternative rock band with a dark, whimsical edge. Throughout the set, the last sunlight shone through the thin black curtains, illuminating the band with a cinematic veil of light. Hypnotic, dark vocals hung over deep bass and twisting telecaster melodies. The audience was entranced by the beautifully bewitching set, left suspended in the final notes and wanting more.
Next came Sam Blakely, marking his first solo performance away from Pyncher. His set was full of personality from stripped-back folky acoustics to the emotional nuances in every note of his voice. Some standout moments were the harmonies that captivated the audience and heightened the emotional tone.
From the moment the Slow Country took to the stage, their presence was immediate. Everything from their sound to their aesthetic was authentic. Their Western-influenced outfits brought a modern twist to cowboy classics with thick denim, fringed jackets and stunning vintage dresses, their style was undeniable.
They opened with their debut single, ‘Walking Song’, a brooding folk-rock anthem, diving into self-doubt and the ache of unrealised potential. The uncanny melodies came to life on the stage, revitalised through staggering guitar riffs and transcending vocals. The whimsical, emotional feel radiated throughout the set. From start to finish, it was a bound of high-energy country clatters, tambourines, riffs, guitar slides, harmonicas and heartful dancing.
The night closed on a joyful high with the new single, ‘Right There Inside’. Joined by a close friend on the trumpet, the band radiated high spirits. The introspective lyrics focus on the importance of living in the present, bringing the crowd into their emotional journey. There was an undeniably infectious energy in the room, making it the perfect end to the night.
