Peterborough four-piece The Portland have dropped their latest single “The Underside”, and from looking on their socials, the band have been teasing this number for a good few weeks now, after dropping their “Anticipate B-side” back in February 2026.
The artwork is a gorgeous birdseye view of ocean waves crashing, with a halo glow of colour cutting through it, one of the nicest single covers I’ve seen in a while, so I really rate that.
It starts with this choppy guitar riff (quite apt with the artwork to be fair) and then this impressive drumbeat cuts through and just builds it more for the vocals to then cut in and take centre stage.
The lyrics are powerful whilst still playing on the subtle side, like it’s going through the inner monologue of someone who is going through the motions of a relationship, or at least the build up and dating/talking stage of one at least, (the deep underside I like to think it is anyway) and trying to see through the mixed messages and actions before coming to a conclusion that it’s not worth it (spoiler, they’re onto something!).
It’s feels quite short, but it stands at three minutes long, just the backing track leads you through incredibly well and you get that lost in it, that it’s over already.
A very well put together track, beautifully mastered, everyone works together brilliantly and has a solid storyline in the lyrics, could be the foundation of something beautiful for The Portland.
