Top class performance by the brilliant Seb Lowe and his mighty band at Digital Newcastle on Thursday night. This politically astute Manchester troubadour has certainly built up an impressive fan base over the past few years. The venue was rammed with crowds singing along to many tracks.
I’ve seen Seb a number of times and this performance was the most accomplished yet. His acerbic wit and outspoken political commentary were clearer than ever, especially on new tracks, including one about Hitler. That particular track could have come straight from the sharpest cabaret club in Weimar Berlin, though its intent was clearly an attack on the current far right. It also contained some epic thumping bass from Rory.
Seb certainly uses his platform well to call for social justice and challenge various forms of prejudice in a manner befitting of artists he admires like Billy Bragg. His attack on the establishment in Terms And Conditions is a massive call to arms to “never step in line” to efforts to be put down. As always, this track received a thumping cheer from the crowds.
Seb’s incredible band were on great form; so impressively tight. New lead guitarist Cal was superb. You could especially hear his pulsating power on tracks like Love Bug. But he was an absolute machine throughout the set.
Kate on violin was super cool as always. She really gives an edgier style and elegance to the indie rock groove, especially on tracks like Kill Him (He’s A Socialist). I also loved her vocal harmonies with Seb on Mr And Mrs Human Race.
Drummer Joel aka The Technician demonstrated his beast like powers on the kit throughout, throwing in some tasty effects on the roto toms too. He was particularly fierce and commanding in the instrumental breakdowns towards the end of the set. This dude is always a pleasure to watch with his slick technical jazz like style matched by his mighty rocker energy around the drum kit.
