Huddersfield singer-songwriter continues his late blooming music journey with the release of this latest single, Selfie Queen. Not taking up music until his mid 50s, he began his quest into songwriting back in 2001, and since then has slowly been building up a solid catalogue of tracks.
Another really examining look at aspects of society, Selfie Queen follow in the same vein as his previous tracks. A track which critiques social media culture and ever evolving modern values, he again manages to dissect quite complex subjects and look at them through the eyes of someone who feels somewhat outside of it.
Through his unusual career path he has managed to establish himself as a little different to the ‘run of the mill’ indie singer songwriter. Having lived most of his life outside of music, soaking in the normality of life rather than creating, you feel a brilliant reflectiveness which shines through in all his tracks, and that is no different here.
Musically it follows the same framework we have heard from him previously. A folk inspired sound, it does contain some very melodic parts, but where it excels most is by allowing his lyrics to take centre stage.
Selfie Queen may not break any new ground, but it further shows how Doyle has now honed in on his little spot within the genre. A brilliant profoundness in his lyrics coupled with relatively simple instrumentals are all he needs for his unique brand of storytelling, and he’s once again found that balance perfectly.
