CALLUM CODD - A CHANGE GONNA COME

WE REVIEW CALLUM CODD’S NEW SONG A CHANGE GONNA COME

Widnes indie riser Callum Codd isn’t messing about with his latest single ‘A Change Gonna Come’. It’s short, sharp, and soaked in grit. A moody little number with real weight behind it. Part protest, part passion, and consequently entirely captivating.

Straight off, it’s without doubt got that early Arctic Monkeys energy. There’s a charm and honesty in Callum’s delivery that sets it apart. The vocal tone has a soft inflection, giving the lyrics a thoughtful edge while still carrying a proper northern bite. There’s something raw about it, something you believe.

The beat moves well. It’s not just a loop, it evolves and shifts. Keeps you guessing. There’s a pulse to it that gives the track a sense of life, a proper heartbeat. The rhythm section works well together and the guitar riff sits nicely. Although a little more fuzz i think would work well, there is a slight feeling its being a touch over compressed.

Now, are there moments the vocal could hit harder? Maybe. Some sections feel like they’re holding back just slightly given the theme. When the chorus rolls around, you half-wish the guitar strums would dig in deeper and shake you a bit. At the same time, the hook’s there. It may need a bit more punch but still, that doesn’t take away from what this track does right. It flows nicely, it’s got shade and shape, and most of all, it’s saying something.

Clocking in at around two minutes, it’s tight, to the point, and leaves you wanting another go. Keep your ears on Widnes native Callum Codd’s future release as he’s just getting started and certainly will make an impact on the local indie scene.
