Julient and Inflection release new song ‘Break Free’. An intriguing attempt at blending early noughties clubland energy with the brooding essence of Depeche Mode. The fifth song in the duo’s installment of releases.
From the beginning, the track opens with soft, sweeping synths and atmospheric backing vocals that create an initial dream state that sets the stage for what feels like a melancholic build. In fact there’s a hopeful undertone, a feeling that something big is coming to whisk you away. However, just as it seems to be gaining momentum, it plateaus. Leaving you craving for something more whilst not fully immersed.
The song is lead by the vocal, which, while well-mixed, feels slightly off the mark in terms of emotional depth. The song’s about breaking free from a toxic relationship, for that reason the delivery needs to be rawer, and more vulnerable. A little more use of shading to contrast from verse to chorus could help truly capture the listener in the journey of escape and self-belief.
While there are glimmers of something special here, moments where the track hints at its full potential. It feels caught in two worlds of leaning into something truly vintage or fully committing to the ‘club scene’.
Despite all that, the pair clearly have potential. With the right tweaks and a sharper focus on authenticity, their future releases could be really exciting. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for what the German duo have to come in 2025!
