After a busy couple of years and innumerable miles, dragging themselves from venue to venue to festival to festival, Preston-based indie pop kids, The Cases, have released their debut EP “Mr Penny“ on the newly formed This Feeling Records, a new joint venture between This Feeling and Lab Records.
Outside of Liverpool (the city always does its own thing anyway), the last couple of years have seen a proliferation (some would say infestation) of inordinately young Indie pop bands from the North West of England go from strength to strength. Ever janglier guitars keeping up with ever cringier singers, and whilst it often comes across a little too innoccuous, there is no denying there certainly seems to be a multigenerational market for this genre.
The four tracks on the ‘Mr Penny’ EP will be well received by fans of this scene as they track the course of a faltering young love – from the uncertainty and excitement documented in ‘The Curse’ through the seperation anxiety of ‘She Said’ to the ‘post loss’ start all over of ‘Romantic’. The songs bound along with the polished production and click-perfect indie rock precision that frustratingly seems the norm these days. There’s a lot to be said for a little less refinement and a whole heap more swagger.
As for the songs, the band states that they were all written back-to-back during a period when the band’s own experiences unleashed a flood of inspiration, and that certainly makes sense upon listening to the tracks collectively. Whereas most contemporary offerings are fleeting compilations of crowd pleasers, this EP does sound like an intentional collective work, and this, all too rare, aesthetic approach from The Cases is to be applauded.
There may be more to this particular bunch of indie pop kids after all.
