Four-piece Northern group, The Maddocks, have emerged back into the forefront of our music picks, dropping their new EP on the 7th of February.
The Mind Palace takes us on a psychedelic spiral of guitars, heavy beats and entrancing vocals. Opening the EP with a spoken word piece was a unique and powerful choice. Immediately grabbing the attention of the listener and setting the tone for what’s to come. Welcoming us into their mind and music creates an initial bond between fan and artists almost instantaneously. Continuing with their intense guitar-led melodies and indie aesthetic, the group have once again impressed. Proving to us from the constant evolution of tracks that they mean business this year and we will likely be seeing lots more of them as they climb the ladder of the music world.
Formerly released tracks Benny Says and These Are The Good Days proved worthy as clear fan favourites. With punchy lyrics and high energy vocals you can’t help but want to move a little to each track. Feeding us with upbeat, in your face melodies that have you on the edge of your seat wondering where they might go next. Grasping the attention of all who listen to them, whether you’ve heard them before or never at all, I highly recommend giving this one a go.
The addition of tracks What are they doing to Sundays? And Frozen Over really cements this into being the powerful EP we have gotten know. Coming all together and completing one another so perfectly whilst still taking moments to stand out on their own too. With hints to their roots within the tracks you can tell just how proud they are to be representing their Northern front. Pulling me in further with each passing track I am in awe of the blend of each song. Having a particular attachment to Frozen Over I found myself playing that one over and over again. Showing off the abilities of each member individually yet still harmonising so well with one another.
Adding to the psychedelic aura around each track is the EP’s cover art. Showing the craziness swimming around in our minds as we juggle everything is a feeling I’m sure many know all too well. It’s truly refreshing to see music of this vibe be made and it stands up representing not only the band’s feelings but many of its listeners feelings too.
