Ava Valianti drops new track Buttercups, an intimate acoustic tune that explodes to life. Hitting you in all the same places as Joni Mitchell and Eva Cassidy, with that little bit of Dolly Parton Charm.
Firstly, what a beautiful voice. It draws you in and highlights every fragile moment of the story. You feel the small-town Massachusetts spirit instantly. The songwriting’s honest and it keeps you engaged.
It’s got that timeless acoustic soul you’d expect, you can’t deny the talent but It got my thinking. What made this song stand out, in a fairly busy musical space, what’s Ava’s thing?
Just when you think you know where it’s going, the song flips the switch. Suddenly you’re lifted by bright, punchy pop-rock that wraps around Ava’s vocal perfectly. It’s big but not too big. There is more than enough punch to make you feel it deep and the arrangement and instrumentation is really cool throughout this section. The clever stops and starts give you space to breathe. They remind you this isn’t background music. The guitars and vocals bounce off each other in a way that feels raw but polished. It’s a song in two parts. The calm and storm, just like love can be.
Overall, to simplify everything, the song is really really good. If there’s one tiny question, it’s how Ava carves her lane in a crowded singer-songwriter world. But at just 16, she’s already showing exactly how and will continue to build on it. After attracting international audiences and building a healthy flow of streams, it’s fair to say Ava Valianti is one to watch. Buttercups is out now. Do yourself a favour and press play!
