A dreamy, fantastical ride through the bittersweet memories is what I would use to describe The Things We Used To by LUNAR BIRD. As soon as I heard the beautiful blend of 80s-inspired, disco city dream pop intro, I fell in love. I knew these are one of those songs that transcends you to another time of your life while listening, and lets you get lost in the music entirely.
The Things We Used To mellows in with the synths and gets the listener into the mood in an instant. The instrumentals are hazy, light, even a bit psychedelic at times, while Roberta’s vocals bring you back on the ground. Throughout the track, her elegant voice blends in so well with the ethereal soundscape, that you slowly lose track of time as she guides you through the reminiscence.
The hook is bright, but there is a slight hint of melancholy played of the retro-sounding synths. ‘I know you’ll feel alone, so alone’, Musillami sings. The Italian-welsh duo absolutely captured the sentiments of impending end to a relationship with this track, the loathe towards oneself unable to move on, the pain of longing and the comfort found in an ultimate embrace with the past.
The Things We Used To is able to communicate feelings that can’t be expressed in any other way, it retraces the painful memories, preserves them in a dreamy sound and delivers them in grace.
