Trailblazers of Wigan’s music scene, The Lilacs have released a new single, Girl Behind The Bar, in the lead-up to their debut album Keeping Up With The Joneses.
Forming in 2019, the band found success from grassroots beginnings, releasing several singles that amassed hundreds of thousands of streams. With their latest single, they’ve given an exciting taste of what’s to come for their first long release.
This leading single opens with a melodic bassline and spring guitar lines, quickly carrying you into a joyful suspense. It’s reminiscent of that whirlwind feeling when you’re around someone you’re into.
The lyrics follow a night out with “the girl behind the bar”, working out if the feeling is mutual and shooting your shot. The verse vocals are conversational with a sweet-sounding tone. As the song progresses, high-pitched keys and fast, slapping drums build up to the peak of the song.
Once the chorus comes in, the vocals escalate with an emotive quality with a catchy lyrical hook: “I’ll be back for you soon, the girl behind the bar”- one to be screamed along to by crowds for sure!
Closing out with rhythmic drums and guitar riffs with distant angelic vocals, the song concludes with a danceable feel- jet fuel for a great crowd.
The band’s vocalist/guitarist, Ollie Anglesea, shared how the single was formed: “‘Girl Behind the Bar’ was the first song I wrote shortly after coming back from the Isle of Wight Festival in 2025. As you can imagine, it’s filled with nothing but good vibes! I think this release really sets the tone for the rest of the album. It’s direct, it’s in your face, and I’m certain this will become a fan favourite.”
I can definitely picture this one at a summer festival as the sun sets. Fortunately, The Lilacs are set to do just that with an upcoming string of summer shows. Festival highlights include Leeds, Truck and Tramlines. Catch them if you’re lucky!
