There’s something sweet and nostalgic about Favourite Hello, the second solo drop from Samedi. From the first silky piano chords, you’re pulled into a soft swirl of noughties pop, with a splash of indie charm for good measure.
It kicks off with warmth. That gentle orchestral lift into the first chorus feels classy, and the drums slide in to keep things moving. There’s a nice shimmer of early Train or Scouting For Girls. The vocal is raw, like it’s pleading with you, but that just adds to the charm. You feel the ache. The lovesick vibe immerses you.
But here’s the thing… that chorus doesn’t quite pack enough punch. The verses carry a real honesty and pull you in. The chorus though, just doesn’t land the same. It’s good, don’t get me wrong, but it’s missing that ‘oomph’ that sticks in your head all day.
Still, there’s plenty to like. The songwriting feels genuine. You can tell Samedi means every word he sings. And the bridge? That’s undoubtedly the gold. It sweeps in and holds you. I can imagine it hitting particularly well live. Lights down, crowd swaying, everyone connected and locked in for a moment.
Overall, it’s a really clean, likeable song. While Favourite Hello might not blow the roof off, it does enough to leave you wanting another taste of what Samedi’s got brewing and a stronger chorus could take this to a different level. Make sure you keep an ear out to see what’s next!
