Birmingham’s Eliza May drops new single ‘Money’, the second from her upcoming EP. The song tackles the reality of modern society but does it with a playful twist and a real groove.
Straight away, the vibe is clear. It’s got that slick R&B feel, mixed with a slightly psychedelic, Ocean Alley feel. The beat bounces, the bass glides, and the whole thing wants you to float. You can tell the production’s reaching for something a little on the spacey side.
While it’s certainly cool, it doesn’t land perfectly and the mix feels a little unfinished. The vocal sits a bit too loud but still, there’s plenty of charm. The verse melodies are a bit underwhelming but flashes of strong songwriting still shine through. And just when you think it might start to coast, as often songs do nowadays, you start to feel it really going somewhere.
Without a doubt something shifts and everything clicks. The bass solo dances just under the surface, tying the whole track together. Suddenly, it feels alive. The vocals and all the harmonies just slot into place, a really strong way to end a song.
Overall, yes there are ways to take Money up another level, however from the songs development throughout you can see it’s well on its way. There’s potential here and Eliza May could carve out a seriously cool lane to sit in. It sits nicely in the indie pocket but would clearly have a huge contemporary appeal. Definitely one to keep an eye on.
