Hailing from London, Paleblu has a range of influences. Creating a sound that reflects ‘growing up on the fringes – both geographically and culturally’, he is reaching out to those who, like himself, feel unheard and are ‘trying to find their place in a world which feels out of reach’ on ‘For the ones, who didn’t get picked’.
Following the style of his previous EPs, his sound is often referred to as ‘indie-jungle’. This unique style has garnered attention, with his single ‘Want U To Know’ remixed by Mitekiss, and ‘Sentimental’, another stand-out from the album, being featured on BBC Radio 1.
Co-produced by Chords, the album is dynamic and complex, displaying Paleblu’s versatility and vulnerability across the 9 tracks. While versatile in genre, the album also ranges in emotion. With some tracks being more raw and introspective as well as triumphant and upbeat, shifting effortlessly through these tones across the record. Opening track ‘Inhale’ is quite different to the following album, but still serves to build momentum for the following ‘Stay Away’ and ‘Waste My Time’, jazzy and tremulous, and particular favourites for me. The album rounds sonically and emotionally in final track ‘Did Before’.
The album also benefits from an array of collaborative features such as ‘Overseas’ with Laville, ‘Synchronise’ with Kieron Boothe and Airz, as well as an interlude in the form of a skit from Liam Bailey. These tracks bring a more laid back sound layered with more rap vocals, adding a rich contrast to the rest of the record.
‘For the Ones Who Didn’t Get Picked’ is captivating and intricate – serving as a deeply personal, yet confident reflection of Paleblu’s personal journey. Technically brilliant; delivering consistence and cohesion, this debut suggests even bigger things to come from Paleblu.
