New West Midlands outfit White Star Line introduce themselves with this debut single, Leaving For The Summer. With influences rooted deeply in Britpop and Madchester, this track pulls both together with a mixture of rapturous riffs and a catchy chorus to create an instantly memorable piece.
Having taken several incarnations and names in the past, the most recent being a duo with frontman Tolly Tams and drummer Jack Greenwood-Evans, this current four-piece form seems to have bought them their biggest and best sound to date. The clear musical quality they had as musicians has been padded out with much more depth with the inclusion of new members, bringing them to a stage with much more chance for expansion.
Having already been performing live for a number of years, Leaving For The Summer feels like a track well set up to become part of their live repertoire. The exponentially enlarged depth to their sound, combined with the fierce drums and guitar which were already there, give it the feel of a track which will be even better heard live than recorded.
As a debut single, this has done everything they will have set out to do. It brings together all the sounds which have influenced them and puts their own spin on them. It’s a track which defines what the band are and how they want their music to be, but also feels like they now have much more potential to experiment and develop it. A top first release.
