Curiously named Jeff ‘The Fish’ Lefroy (yes that’s his actual artist name) is an independent musician from Perpignan. Despite his Irish roots, Jeff now resides in France where he spends his days nurturing his new-found solo career.
His latest release is an opinionated take on the controversial world of politics, which we’re all familiar with, in the form of a robust blues tune entitled Don’t Blame The Politician.
There’s no hesitation as the track begins with a spirited guitar riff played by ‘The Fish’ himself. Shortly after, the ensemble comes in featuring swinging drums, bluesy Hammond-style keys and, the star of the show, Jeff’s thick and raspy vocals. His lyrics set up the song’s thematic stance; don’t blame the politician/you get what you vote for/check em out/find out what they’re about/before you put your cross in the box.
The words are clear and strong; however, there’s an air of mixed messaging. On the one hand, Jeff seems to be accusing voters of miseducation. On the other, he’s criticising politicians’ trustworthiness. This is evident in the chorus as he sings, “Don’t blame the politician/they’ll take you for a ride.” So, who does he truly feel is to blame?
Despite the lyrical confusion, the track is structurally sound, emphasising the chorus with embellished arrangement and fun, groovy solo sections. A particularly captivating moment is the harmonica solo which, quite frankly, we don’t hear enough of anymore.
Don’t Blame The Politician ends with vigour, as any blues-rock song should, building up to a great extended chorus before slowing down and rounding off.
Overall, this new track from Jeff ‘The Fish’ Lefroy is full of inspired character. However, with a little lyrical refinement and less confusing messaging, it could be even better.
