With a post-punk intro including the chirps of birds and chimes of a suncatcher, this song greets you with a feeling so calm you have no choice but to listen to what this tune has to offer. It has a soothing vibe that invites you to reminisce about summer with friends.
As the song builds, the naturistic quality is soon joined by the driving drums of Joe Kilroy and dreamy guitar of Jamie Halliday and it is simply unmistakable. It gives the song the indie vibes that echo through Manchester, which Spangled are great at producing. The way Ben Johnson sings the song in such a Mancunian way would draw any indie fan in immediately as Oasis and Stone Roses are undoubtedly two of the bands main influences.
Lyrically, Perfect Recluse explores the feelings of what could be considered isolation, but I feel like the song reclaims those kinds of feelings, so by listening you realise it’s not so bad to feel alone sometimes. The lyrics tell their own story as much as the instrumental itself.
The chorus ‘hold my breath and change my name, I’m going to staple the sky with memory lane’, suggests that not only are you exploring yourself, but by travelling to the world, you can also find out more about yourself and create great memories, which makes the song feel even more inclusive. Not only that – the chorus blossoms and becomes so catchy that you want to keep the song on repeat.
Spangled have managed to create a track that feels so warm and timeless, weaving naturistic imagery and an introspective theme into a melody that is uniquely their own.
