ARCHIE BAKER- CARBROOK

WE REVIEW THE NEW ALBUM FROM ARCHIE BAKER- CARBROOK

Archie Baker, an up-and-coming artist in the music industry, has recently released his debut album titled “Carbrook”. The album is a modern take on soul and blues music and features his nine-piece band, Archie Baker and The Blue Meanies.

It includes eight unique tracks, each exploring a different blend of soul and blues. Throughout the album, Baker draws on a range of musical influences, such as Robert Cray, Dire Straits, Sammy Rae & The Friends, and The Dip.  Additionally, three of these tracks were recorded and produced by Grammy Award-winning producer Chris Wilkinson, showcasing the album’s overall quality.

Baker’s debut album displays his musical growth and artistry, with each track demonstrating his raw talent and emotional depth. The album includes groovy melodies and poignant lyrics, ranging from upbeat anthems to soulful ballads. This makes it a must-listen for music enthusiasts of all genres. Baker’s playing style ranges from gentle accompaniment to euphoric, soaring lead, while his vocals have a distinct, husky sound.

The album’s first half primarily focuses on retro-sounding soul. It demonstrates the band’s ability to capture the essence of classic soul music. The use of horns, strings, and backing vocals adds depth and texture to the songs, resulting in a rich and full sound that is both nostalgic and contemporary.

The second track, “Anyway,” is a standout on the album, featuring a punchy funk-disco guitar progression that immediately captures the listener’s attention. Baker’s powerful vocals, combined with the rhythm section’s infectious groove, create a track that is both fun and energetic.

The fourth track, “Missing You”, is a catchy soul-pop duet with Baker’s long-term friend and collaborator, Chloë Beth Rogers. Inspired by the likes of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, the song is a testament to the power of two voices coming together in perfect harmony.

The album gradually swings into blues. Baker’s guitar skills are showcased on tracks five and seven (“Ruin” and “The Disco Blues”), which both include heartbreaking lead guitar that complements the sorrowful lyrics.

Baker combines the two genres for the final track, “What I Did Wrong”, which features a colourful and emotional outro. This track is the perfect culmination of all of the emotions and musical styles explored throughout the album.

Overall, Carbrook is without a doubt a must-listen for anyone who loves soul and blues music. With its powerful lyrics, incredible musicianship, and authentic sound, it is a true masterpiece that will stand the test of time.

The album’s recording was made possible thanks to Help Musicians’ generous support, which provided Archie with the funds he required to fulfil his musical dreams. Their support has enabled Baker to pursue his passion and deliver an exceptional debut album to his fans.
