Black Pope

WE REVIEW THE NEW ALBUM FROM BLACK POPE – WHITE SMOKE

Black Pope’s new album ‘White Smoke’ is everything you’d expect from an artist known for his dark, cinematic edge. It’s rebellious, full of attitude and explores themes of survival, transformation and defiance. Gritty guitars, powerful lyrics and a mix of high-energy tracks are what make ‘White Smoke’ stand out.

The album kicks off with “Atom Bomb”, which hits hard right from the start. There’s a moment in the opening where you’re not even sure if it’s screaming or just the instrumentation, it’s that intense. The guitar riffs are magnetic and the song is immediately catchy. With lyrics like “C’mon baby do the voodoo skull / I’ll take your insides out until my mouth is full”, it’s dark, strange, and playful at the same time, setting the tone for the rest of the album.

Later on, we have “Werewolf, Man”, and it keeps the energy going strong. Black Pope’s storytelling takes center stage here, with lyrics that dive into the idea of inner darkness and survival. The song is packed with attitude and the chorus – “I’m a full-blown man killin’ werewolf man” – sticks with you. It’s gritty, edgy, and lyrically daring, much like the artist himself. The way the track intertwines mythology with personal reflection feels like a modern twist on rock’s rebellious spirit.

Then, “Night of the Long Tongues” is another standout for me. I love the vocal work here, especially the “ouh ouh” harmonies in the background that feel like an integral part of the instrumentation. The bass is slick, giving the song a groove that anchors the whole thing, while Black Pope’s voice rises and falls with intensity.

The album’s lead single, “She’s Alive”, really steals the show. It’s a love song, but not in the traditional sense – it’s about the beauty of imperfections. The song’s energy channels ‘50s rock, with swift guitar tones and almost ghostly vocal moments. It’s no surprise this was chosen as the lead single. It is everything ‘White Smoke’ is about: dark, intense, and thrilling.

The album closes with “I Still Feel Like a Virgin”, and it’s a surprising but perfect way to end things. After all the intensity, the track feels introspective, with the entire song primarily led by piano. But as it builds, there’s a sense of urgency that reminds me of the tension you feel in The Phantom of the Opera soundtrack, like it’s slowly building to something huge. It’s a beautiful contrast to the rest of the album and wraps things up with an emotional punch.
