Multi-talented YouTuber Jah-Sun Collier flaunts the versatility of his skillset in his full-length debut: LOL!
This album initially presents itself as a comical project, comprised of bizarre songs named after things like Cereal!, Train! and even Hotdog Water!. However, beneath his quirky façade lies some genuinely impressive musicianship. Through a characteristic rap flow laid over inch perfect homecooked beats, Jah-Sun Collier breathes life into the inanimate.
It begins with the track Recap! which provides context to the American songwriter’s craft; he raps about things that no one else does. And, as you listen on, his unique take on the genre becomes clear.
Food-based tracks Hubba Bubba! and Cereal! draw a witty perspective on consumption. The palette may take a moment to adjust, but once you appreciate the thorough storytelling, scene-setting, and musical mimesis, these songs become oddly entertaining. I mean, where else are you going to hear a mildly aggressive trap song about cereal?
Collier states it himself in the brutally self-aware interlude Appetite! This satire track imitates conversation where he mocks his own songwriting over a backing of acoustic guitar and soft percussion. Reminiscent of “elevator music,” you can picture this awkward encounter really taking place. Including such a moment in the album emphasises Collier’s happy-go-lucky spirit that allows him to not take life too seriously.
Yes, LOL! might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but the level of skill required to produce such polished music should be appreciated. Furthermore, his endearing lack of fear in straying from the norm makes this album one of a kind.
